Post 3: Life on land

Meaning of Goal 15: life on land:

The mission of the goal is to focus on the environmental issues which are to protect, restore and promote sustainable rules of terrestrial ecosystems these rules will help manage forests sustainably, battle desertification, halt and reverse land degradation, halt biodiversity loss, and take an immediate action to address climate change. (United Nations, n.d.).

- promoting life on land using better resources is an objective of the ISO standards.

“the two-part series ISO 14055, Environmental management – Guidelines for establishing good practices for combatting land degradation and desertification, is a welcome addition to the ISO 14000 family of standards for environmental management.” (ISO, n.d.).

The importance of this goal:

Nature is essential to our life since it provides resources like; food, fiber, and oxygen and controls our weather patterns and crops pollination. But the burden on it is becoming worse. It was discovered that the ecosystems on which humans and all other animals depend are failing more quickly than ever before affecting the foundations of our economy, livelihoods, food security, health, and quality of life on a global scale.

ensuring that terrestrial and inland freshwater habitats, including forests, wetlands, mountains, and drylands, are conserved, restored, and used sustainably in accordance with commitments under international agreements. (United Nations, n.d.).

The statistics and data:

- In 2021, Human actions were causing biodiversity to diminish faster than at any other point in human history. The world's 2020 goals to stop biodiversity loss have not been met.

Fortunately, conservation efforts may prevent further extinctions of species. For instance, site preservation, conservation in zoos and other collections, and the eradication of invasive species have all benefitted a number of bird and mammal species. (United Nations, n.d.)

“Best estimates of the proportions of species threatened with extinction data, by species group,2021.” (United Nations, n.d.).

- in 2022, The number of countries incorporating environmental and biodiversity assets into national accounting and reporting systems continues to rise. However, this opportunity is not being taken advantage of. Until now, biodiversity has been rarely discussed in recovery spending. (United Nations, n.d.).

“Number of countries reporting different levels of progress towards national targets established in accordance with Aichi Biodiversity Target 2, by January 2022.” (United Nations, n.d.).
